Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the Pancreas does not produce enough Insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the Insulin it produces. People with diabetes can develop many different foot problems that most often happen when there is nerve damage. It can cause loss of feeling in the foot, so you can injure it and not know it. Due to neuropathy and impaired blood circulation, foot ulcers occur on the ball of the foot or the bottom of the big toe.

What is Diabetic Neuropathy?

Diabetic Neuropathy is type of nerve complication that arises in those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes as high blood sugar (glucose) can result in nerve damages throughout the body – common in legs and feet. It can lead to infection, injuries, slips, and possibly even amputation.

How important is Diabetes?

Today over 400 million patients are affected by Diabetes globally, which is almost 8% of the total global population. Unfortunately we are expecting to have 10% of the worldwide population being affected by this silent killer by 2040. For Canada, we do not see any better picture either.

  • Over 30% of Canadians are currently living with the pre-diabetes condition, and this will increase to 33% by 2025
  • Every minute 3 Canadians are getting affected by Diabetes.
  • Health Canada mentions Diabetic Neuropathy as one of the most significant healthcare-related concern and cost burdens on the economy.
